Let a Portion of the Population become Rich First
English Translation: "Let a Portion of the Population become Rich First"
Upon Mao's death in 1976, China slowly began to emerge from the self-imposed chaos and destruction of the Cultural Revolution. Eventually, under Deng Xiaoping's leadership, economic reforms were initiated encouraging small entrepreneurs and loosening economic controls more broadly. As an interim solution to the ideological confusion inherent in this transition from the permanent revolution Mao had encouraged, several slogans were promulgated, of which "Let Some of the People Become Rich First" is one of the most famous. This image is actually a pastiche of styles, mixing Cultural Revolution-esque imagery on the right with new sloganeering on the left.
